How to reconnect Normal MCP in ChatGPT

Restore ChatGPT access to Normal without confusing it with reconnecting a WhatsApp Connection.

Use this guide when ChatGPT lost access to Normal because authorization expired, you revoked access, ChatGPT needs you to reauthenticate, or the saved app entry disappeared. This is separate from reconnecting a WhatsApp Connection inside Normal.

First decide which thing broke

  • If ChatGPT cannot find Normal, asks you to connect again, asks you to reauthenticate, or no longer runs Normal tools, continue here.
  • If Normal is still connected but the affected WhatsApp Connection shows reconnect_required, disconnected, degraded, or another unavailable state, use the separate WhatsApp Connection reconnect flow in Normal instead.

Re-enable the existing Normal app

  1. Start a new ChatGPT conversation and open the apps or tools picker.
  2. If Normal is listed, enable it for that chat and retry your request.
  3. In Settings -> Apps -> Enabled Apps, open Normal and use any available Reconnect, Reauthenticate, or Refresh action before retrying.

Authorize Normal again

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings -> Apps and find Normal in Enabled Apps.
  2. Choose the connection or reauthentication action ChatGPT shows and complete OAuth again.
  3. In Normal, select the WhatsApp Connections you want ChatGPT to use and confirm each permission area separately.
  4. Review the new grant before you allow access. Reauthorization creates a new MCP Authorization. It does not silently restore an older grant, and a WhatsApp Connection added later is still outside the new grant.

Re-add the MCP server when the saved entry is gone

  1. Confirm your workspace still allows custom MCP apps. If ChatGPT requires Developer mode for your account, turn it on under Settings -> Apps -> Advanced Settings.
  2. Open Settings -> Apps -> Create.
  3. Add the Normal MCP server URL with OAuth and let ChatGPT scan tools if it prompts you.
  4. Finish sign in with Normal and select the exact WhatsApp Connections and permissions again.

If you do not see Create or Enabled Apps at all, your workspace admin may need to enable developer mode or custom MCP app access first.

Verify safely

Ask ChatGPT:

List only the Normal WhatsApp Connections you can access. For each one, return only the connection display name and phone number suffix.

Expected result:

It should return only the WhatsApp Connections you selected, such as Personal WhatsApp (3456). It should not read message content, expose full phone numbers, or send anything.

Revoke stale access first when needed

If you want to remove an older or unwanted ChatGPT grant before reconnecting, open MCP Authorizations in Normal and revoke the entry you no longer want. Then reconnect from ChatGPT and create a fresh authorization.

If ChatGPT still shows Normal as connected after you revoke the grant, return to Settings -> Apps -> Enabled Apps, refresh or remove the saved app entry, and complete the connection flow again.
