How to connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT with MCP

ChatGPT's current docs place custom MCP setup under Apps with developer mode enabled where your plan requires it. Once custom MCP access is available in your workspace, you can connect Normal through OAuth and choose the exact WhatsApp Connections and capabilities ChatGPT may use.

Connect ChatGPT

1. In ChatGPT, open Settings -> Apps.
2. If your workspace requires it, turn on Developer mode under Settings -> Apps -> Advanced Settings, or ask your workspace admin to enable custom MCP apps in workspace settings.
3. Open Apps -> Create, add the Normal MCP server with OAuth, and finish tool scanning if ChatGPT prompts for it.
4. Sign in to Normal and explicitly select each allowed WhatsApp Connection and each permission area you want ChatGPT to use.
5. Start a new chat, enable Normal from the apps or tools menu, and test with a read request.

Can ChatGPT send after receiving read access?

No. Stored Message read permission and send permission are separate. Every outbound messaging tool invocation also requires Client Confirmation in the MCP Client.
